New to NA

You never have to use again.

What NA is, what happens at a meeting, and where to start.

The basics

Any question, any hour: 866-925-2148.

Who we are

Narcotics Anonymous is a nonprofit fellowship of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. We are recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. There is only one requirement for membership: the desire to stop using.

We are not interested in what or how much you used, who your connections were, what you have done in the past, or how much or how little you have — only in what you want to do about your problem and how we can help.

Not sure the word "addict" fits? The pamphlet Am I an Addict? asks the questions only you can answer.

What happens at a meeting

Meetings open with short readings, then members share their experience with addiction and recovery. Nobody gives advice, lectures, or takes attendance. Arrive early, stay late, and ask questions before and after; that is how people get known. Many members suggest ninety meetings in ninety days to build a footing.

Open meetings (O) welcome anyone, including family and friends. Closed meetings (C) are for addicts, or for anyone who thinks they might have a drug problem. Information pamphlets are free at meetings; books are sold at group cost.

At your first meeting you may be offered a white keytag. Take it if you want it. It just means you are willing to try.

Sponsorship

A sponsor is another recovering addict who has worked the Twelve Steps and helps you do the same — someone to call before things go sideways, not after. There is no paperwork: you simply ask someone whose recovery you respect. NA's pamphlet on sponsorship covers how it works.

Getting involved

Service is how newcomers become members. In your home group that can be as simple as showing up early to make coffee, setting out literature, greeting people at the door, cleaning up after, chairing a meeting, or taking a trusted-servant position. Area service comes later, if you want it.

Daily reprieve

Many members start the day with the Just for Today meditation. One page, one day at a time.

We have found a way out, and we offer freedom from active addiction to anyone who wants it. Narcotics Anonymous
